In recent weeks, cases have roughly doubled every seven days, although admittedly from a low base. There are some signs, though, that Indian variant is starting to cause a surge in cases overall – on Thursday coronavirus infections topped 3,000 for the second consecutive day, the first time cases reached that high since mid-April. Cases have risen by 20.5 per cent in the last seven days, compared to the previous week.  Why is it so worrying?  Experts have already said that it is a straight race between the speed of the spread of the variant and the speed at which the UK is vaccinating people.
