The annual Global Greening campaign kicked off in 2010 when the Sydney Opera House and the Auckland Sky Tower went green. This year will see some 670 sites in 66 countries participating in the campaign, making it the most ambitious year for the project so far, the Embassy of Ireland in Ljubljana said in a press release.

People in the capital, Wellington, already took to the streets to celebrate on Sunday with a parade along the city’s waterfront, followed by live performances at the wharf.
Meanwhile, organisers of the world’s oldest St Patrick’s Day parade – in New York City – are still intent on hosting a symbolic parade today to avoid letting the virus rain on the parade’s 260th anniversary this year.
The small symbolic march along Fifth Avenue will be held early this morning, the exact timing of which will not be announced to prevent crowds from gathering.
While parades in most North American cities have been cancelled due to Covid-19, virtual events are taking place – including a parade in cars in St James, Long Island, while Hilton Head, South Carolina, will host a boat parade on Sunday.
Tourism Ireland’s annual Global Greening initiative has gone from strength to strength – from its beginning back in 2010, when just the Sydney Opera House and the Sky Tower in Auckland went green, to this year, which will be the biggest ever Global Greening.
From Rome to Rio and from London to Las Vegas, a host of famous buildings and sites around the world will be illuminated in green to mark St Patrick’s Day.
Iconic buildings include the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Niagara Falls, Victoria Falls, the Sydney Opera House, the ‘Welcome’ sign in Las Vegas, the Sky Tower in Auckland, Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Burj Al Arab in Dubai, the Prince’s Palace of Monaco and the Cibeles Fountain in Madrid.

690 landmarks turned a familiar shade of shamrock green last night, as the world marked a subdued St Patrick s Day.
The Irish national holiday on 17 March has been adopted as an international celebration of the Emerald Isle, stout ale and
bráithreachas. However with much of the world still affected by Coronavirus restrictions, many of the traditions and parties could not take place.
However, one of the newest traditions was able not only to go ahead, but to grow in scale.
The Global Greening is in its 12 year, which sees global landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil being lit in green light.
