Catholic theologian Father Hans Küng challenged papal infallibly and lost his license to teach Catholic theology.
The controversial Swiss-born theologian’s lucidly expressed thoughts found a place in more than 50 books and countless speeches.
Father Küng’s relentless tirade against the Church’s hierarchy, particularly popes, earned him the sobriquet “Antichrist” as he was accused of being the greatest threat to the Church since Martin Luther.

Father Hans Küng, the prominent and sometimes controversial Swiss Catholic theologian, died peacefully in his sleep in the university town of Tübingen, Germany, where he had lived and lectured since 1960, said a spokesman for his Global Ethic Foundation. He was 93.
Father Küng was one of the most outspoken Roman Catholic theologians and one of the sharpest critics of St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. He had worked with and studied with Pope Benedict, then-Father Joseph Ratzinger, in Tübingen in the 1960s.

Swiss theologian Hans Küng, one of the most outspoken critics of the Roman Catholic church, has died aged 93.

Küng passed away in the German town of Tübingen, where he had lived and lectured since the 1960s, his Global Ethic FoundationExternal link announced on Tuesday.
He gained a reputation as a prolific writer, promoting dialogue among religions as well as challenging the Vatican, notably for his controversial views on papal infallibility.

Church representatives and political leaders are paying tribute to Swiss theologian Hans Küng who died Tuesday at the age of 93.
The theologian who participated in the Second Vatican Council, was a critic of the doctrine on papal infallibility and his authorization to teach Catholic theology was revoked in 1979.
Leading tributes to the theologian German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called Küng an enduring role model as a scholar, a brilliant thinker with a sharp mind, who was at the same time an alert political observer and a committed fellow citizen.
