Local hygienist reflects on trip to Cambodia, where she cleaned teeth and spread smiles

MALONE â Shortly before the pandemic changed the daily lives of people around the world, a local woman traveled to Southeast Asia, volunteering as part of a group that went to Cambodia to provide dental care to children. Lauren LaBare, of Malone, was the sole dental hygienist among 17 volunteers on the trip to Siem Reap, in the northwestern portion of the country, in November 2019. LaBare described her time in Cambodia as a unique experience, and one that was incredibly rewarding, explaining how happy the children whose teeth she cleaned were to receive dental care. âIt was amazing to see the kidsâ smiles after we cleaned their teeth,â LaBare said, âI found that they were very gracious and appreciative.â

one was doctor dennis grahams from colorado. he is remembered for hiking halfway up mount everest to deliver dental care for buddhist monks. we are told the good doctor grahams worked a third of the year free of charge as a volunteer dentist helping those who needed so much and could only pay with their gratitude. lori matthews, co-founder of global dental relief is joining us by phone from denver with more on the charitable works and contributions of the late dr. tom graham. lori, good to have you with us. thank you. why don t you tell us more about tom. i mean, just talking about his hike up mount everest to help these buddhist monks, about 100 other people, also, is just the tip of what this gentleman did. that s right. tom was our very first volunteer in 2001. he immediately dedicated himself to the work. he gave four months a year.
