Bawa Testifies in N1 4bn Oil Subsidy Fraud Case

By Kingsley Nwezeh The ongoing trial of Mr. Abubakar Peters and his company, Nadabo Energy Limited, for an alleged N1.4 billion fraud before Justice C.A. Balogun of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, continued yesterday with the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, making history as the first chairman of the commission to give evidence in court. An EFCC statement said Bawa, who testified as the fifth prosecution witness, PW5, had begun his examination-in-chief on June 3, 2015 long before his appointment as the EFCC chairman. Before yesterday’s proceedings, Bawa had given evidence against the defendants, who pleaded “not guilty” to the alleged fraud.

Punch Newspapers Sections Oluwatosin Omojuyigbe The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, on Wednesday testified before the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja in an alleged N1.4bn subsidy fraud suit against an oil company, Nadabo Energy. The EFCC had accused Abubakar Peters and his company, Nadabo Energy, of allegedly using forged documents to obtain N1,464,961,978.24 from the Federal Government as an oil subsidy after allegedly inflating the quantity of premium motor spirit purportedly supplied to 14,000M. Bawa, before he was appointed the EFCC chairman, testified before the court where he identified two documents as email correspondence between him and Ullrich Afini Awani of Global Commodities Africa and the Certificate of Identification.

Punch Newspapers Sections Sodiq Oyeleke with agency report Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, appeared before an Ikeja High Court on Wednesday to give evidence in a N1.4 billion fraud trial. The fraud trial involved an oil company, Nadabo Energy, which Bawa had earlier testified against before his appointment as the EFCC boss. Bawa, who is the fifth prosecution witness,  had told Justice C.A. Balogun of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja that the defendant used forged documents to benefit from the Federal Government’s subsidy regime. Bawa had in February identified two documents as email correspondence between him and Ullrich Afini Awani of Global Commodities Africa and the Certificate of Identification.
