Have you ever been so frustrated and angry that you felt like telling everybody and everything in the whole world to go (expletive deleted) themselves? If so, you will agree, as I do, with a Supreme Court ruling on a First Amendment issue this past week.
Brandi Levy now an 18-year-old college student was feeling that way as a ninth-grader when she was passed over for the varsity cheerleading squad at Mahoney Area High School in Pennsylvania. On a Saturday in her high school freshman year, she posted on Snapchat an image of herself and a friend with upraised middle fingers and the words: “F - school, f - softball, f - cheer, f - everything.”

If anyone had told me six months ago that someday I would write a column supporting the actions of a politician named Cheney, I would have suggested that this person pay a visit to a highly competent psychiatrist.
After all, when Richard B. Cheney was vice president, I once described him in a column as “evil incarnate.” This was the deadly hawk behind the curtain who pushed President George W. Bush into starting a disastrous war in Iraq, based on false reports of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. This was the slick conniver who encouraged Dubya to expand presidential and surveillance powers beyond the limits of the Constitution. No way would readers ever see the name Cheney being praised under my byline.

There are many things I don’t understand about the Republican Party these days. The unabashed worship of a defeated, twice-impeached former president whose Big Lie incited a blood-thirsty insurrectionist mob is a prime example.
But even more difficult for me to understand than this blind idolatry the most puzzling issue of all is the Republican Party’s ongoing war against transgender people in general, and against transgender children in particular. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, Republicans in 27 state legislatures have filed more than 100 bills attacking transgender people since 2020. My question about this is: why?
