As Faith Morgan told me in a recent interview, it is difficult to wrap our heads around the magnitude of the problems we have created through our reliance on fossil fuels. We are embedded in an extractive economic system, living lifestyles that are destroying life on the planet, she explained.
Recognizing the environmental crisis, Village Council, of which I am the vice president, approved a 2021 goal to create a Climate Action and Sustainability Plan. The Environmental Commission is currently reviewing a draft plan that builds on earlier work of the Yellow Springs Resilient Network, as well as that of former commission member Duard Headley.
When the Gaunt Park pool opens on May 29, it will look, in many ways, similar to last year. Masks will be required, and the grassy area will be marked to designate socially distanced seating areas.
But there will be some changes. Gone are both the two-hour session limits and locals-only days. And higher prices will be charged across the board in the first pool rate increase since 2009.
Council passed the first reading of an ordinance amending pool rates at its March 15 regular meeting. A second reading and public hearing for the measure is April 5.
The largest cost increases will affect nonresidents. In another change, there are no longer lower rates for Miami Township residents.

Beatty Hughes Park, located between Kieth’s Alley and Corry Street, may someday host live music concerts, outdoor movies, family picnics and art exhibits.
Yellow Springs Village Manager Josué Salmerón laid out a $30,000 park renovation proposal at Village Council’s Feb. 16 regular meeting. The presentation was discussion only.
Tentative plans call for a pavilion, new landscaping, pathways, additional benches and picnic tables at the 1.1-acre municipal property, colloquially known as the “Little Park.”
The park’s central location and proximity to both downtown and the bike path make it an important space for village life, Salmerón said. Yet it remains underused, he believes.
