Gladstone usurps Brisbane as much cheaper Inland Rail destination

Australia’s $15 billion Inland Rail project from Melbourne would be more than $4 billion cheaper if it used Toowoomba as a hub for local freight rather than extending to Brisbane, a study shows.
International freight, however, would be transported by rail from Toowoomba, through the Surat Basin, then exported from Gladstone, not Brisbane, the study released in February by AEC Group consultants shows.
Gladstone is asserting its case to be considered the destination of Australia’s now $15 billion Inland Rail project.

The Observer following an Inland Rail round table meeting last week in Gladstone. The meeting was also attended by Member for Gladstone Glenn Butcher, Gladstone Mayor Matt Burnett, CQUniversity Chancellor John Abbott and local economic groups. Mr O Dowd accused Senator Chisholm of playing politics over the issue. Senator Chisholm needs to stop playing politics with the people of Gladstone, he said. This is a very broad presumption and comment to make and simply not correct. Mr O Dowd said he had been a strong advocate for the Inland Rail project to be linked to the port city.
