TESS BRILL: 1923 â 2020
Tessie (Tess) Brill, aged 97, left a legacy of activism in Aboriginal empowerment, feminism, socialism, womenâs health, human rights, community services and environmental protection.
Tess Brill campaigner for women with husband Victor.
From the 1950s in Lismore, Tess was an activist with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. She worked closely with the Aboriginal people on the Cubawee Reserve to earn their trust and respect. This was before her husband Victor Brill became the teacher at the segregated school. Without telling people what to do or how to do it, she worked with the families to access drinkable water, sanitation services and electricity supplies. Her advocacy, under their advice and instructions, never stopped.
