It wasn’t the Turkey Trot familiar from past years, but this year’s United Way event still was able to bring Thanksgiving meals to more than 4,300 needy people in Palm Beach County.
Normally a 5K run, this 12th annual edition of the Turkey Trot was held virtually over the Thanksgiving week because of the coronavirus pandemic. Some 696 people registered for the virtual race, which began Nov. 20 and ended Nov. 27. All participants were awarded a T-shirt, finisher medal and goody bag.
The Town of Palm Beach United Way uses the proceeds from Turkey Trot registrations and donations to award grants to local nonprofit agencies that provide take-home meals and socially distanced Thanksgiving celebrations for people who would otherwise go without a holiday dinner.
