The pandemic still chugs along with each day bringing what health officials say is too many new cases. Another 550 British Columbians were told in the past day that they have contracted the virus that health officials have warned about since January 2020. This brings the total number of those infected by the virus in B.C. to 85,119 people – more than 92.5% of whom, or 78,770 individuals, are considered to have recovered because they have tested negative for the virus twice. The. number of those actively battling infections rose by 15 overnight to 4,869 people. Health officials are closely monitoring another 8,971 individuals for symptoms because they have had known contact with people who have been identified as carrying the virus.

Case numbers remain around similar levels as previous days, which are as both B.C. provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix have previously pointed out remain too high.
What’s more, the P1 variant, which was first detected in Brazil, has now arrived in B.C. (more details below) for a total of three variants of concern present in the province.
Yesterday (March 8), phone lines at health call centres opened to start taking requests for vaccination appointments. However, the huge volume of calls encountered problems getting through on lines, long wait times, and disconnected calls.

British Columbia now has cases of three COVID-19 variants, after the troubling appearance of the P1 variant on Tuesday.
While variants identified in U.K., South African and Brazilian are all more contagious, the P1 variant from Brazil has been shown to reinfect people who had recovered from the original virus. All three can be managed with vaccines.
