Public health workplace recommendations ignored

Shadow health minister Giulia Jones. A MAJORITY of the recommendations made by an independent review into the workplace culture of Canberra’s public health services have been ignored, said shadow health minister Giulia Jones. The report, “Review into the Workplace Culture within ACT Public Health Services”, was published in 2019 and identified troubling levels of bullying, poor leadership and inappropriate recruitment practices. It made 20 recommendations and only seven of them have been implemented, said Ms Jones. She said Canberra health workers deserve to have the recommendations of a review into workplace culture in the ACT public health system implemented in full.

Lee ruffles Ratters as Libs sap starts to rise

IAN MEIKLE. ruffle the feathers of Greens leader, government minister and anti-gas man Shane Rattenbury in the Assembly the other day.  Ian Meikle. Ratters had been nudged to admit that the spanking new $300 million Civic office block, built to house 1100 ACT public servants, is powered by… (oh, no; oh, yes) gas! Despite contradicting his own government’s (subsequent) policy on smart energy, the ACT has signed a 20-year lease with an additional option of a further five years that could lock in the power source for up to 2046. Given he’ll be 76 when the lease expires, there’s a bleakly amusing irony that the Greens leader will see out his political career in an office heated in winter and cooled in summer by reviled gas. Only losing an election, it seems, will save him.

Women s hospital expansion end date pushed to 2023

ORIGINALLY expected to be completed by mid-2021, the long-awaited expansion to the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children won’t be finished until at least September 2023.  The delay was revealed today (February 26) in Estimates Hearings, where the ACT government described the expansion as “complicated and challenging”. Last year, following an inquiry into the project, the government announced it would add a $50 million early pregnancy unit to the expansion, which might be behind the delays. As part of the unit, women with complications relating to early pregnancy, such as early pregnancy loss, will be able to access care. But Opposition spokesperson for health, Giulia Jones, said today’s admission is simply the latest excuse from Labor and the Greens for their failures to deliver their health promises.

Gordon slips quietly back to government service

IAN MEIKLE. WE heard a whisper that former Attorney-General and Arts Minister Gordon Ramsay , whose one-term political career came to a crashing end in October, had quietly got a new job. In the Chief Minister’s office.  Ian Meikle. It’s been barely four months since the election that saw the former lawyer and minister of religion, sent packing by the voters of Ginninderra. Not a great look for Labor, so news editor Danielle Nohra called Andrew Barr’s office. The media flack was all terribly surprised by the news, but invited email questions.  Okay: six questions followed around what’s the job, what’s the pay, how was he selected?

Canberra Liberals leader Elizabeth Lee has been nominated for the 2020 McKinnon Emerging Political Leader of the Year award for speaking out against sexual harassment and racism. Ms Lee came out in June last year and said that she had been persistently sexually propositioned by former High Court judge Dyson Heydon at the 2013 University of Canberra law ball. She chose to speak out about the incident after being inspired by the actions of the judge’s associates who came forward with allegations of sexual harassment by Mr Heydon.
