On February 4, the nation looked on in horror as the body of 23-year-old court clerk Andrea Bharatt was found down a precipice, off a lonely stretch of road in the Heights of Aripo.

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar warned the country that without due process and the rule of law, Trinidad and Tobago could become a police state.
Speaking at a virtual meeting of the United National Congress (UNC) last night, Persad-Bissessar said the UNC stands on the side of all law-abiding citizens:
‘The UNC stands on the side of all law-abiding citizens, and you’re innocent until you’re proven guilty. They say emotions are running high so we shouldn’t talk about rights, well the day they break down your door to pick up your daughter or your son, and they get no justice, they’re found guilty before any court of law could have a part to play, I wonder what you’ll say then.’
