Not every architecture award-winner is a high-end, big-spend build. Sometimes, it’s the simplicity of a humble bach that catches the eye of awards judges. And so it is for the Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay Awards announced on May 7, 2021. Housing Awards winners include the off-grid Mahanga Bach by Edwards White Architects. The bach was built to a low budget on a site where the family of four would formerly camp. And it has been designed so friends and family can still use the yard for tenting, while the building acts as a meeting place to share meals.
Origin
In March 2021, an online advertisement appeared to show an airplane and a train on an airport runway with steam pouring out of the train’s engine. The caption of the ad may have led readers to believe that the plane was about to hit the train. It said: “17 Airports With the Most Dangerous Landings in the World.”

It had all the makings of being a misleading photo. First, it was in an online ad, which often is notthemostreliable source of facts. The shadows looked too perfect. The light was bright and sunny. The grass was green and pretty. Perhaps it was from a flight simulation video game?

The brand-new industrial premises housing a major national supplier to New Zealand’s horticulture industry have been placed on the market for sale.
The single-storey building on a freehold site at 32 Saleyards Road, Matawhero, lies in a rural and industrial area about 10 kilometres west of central Gisborne. It is fully leased to national horticultural supply company Horticentre Limited.
Formerly known as Veg Gro Supplies, the company was established 40 years ago by the Auckland Vegetable Growers’ Society. The Horticentre group has since grown to employ more than 70 people, with 11 stores across the country and a merchant reseller division based in Christchurch.
