The Hawk Eye
WEST BURLINGTON Junior high and high school is a hard enough time for young women without having to worry about having pads or tampons on hand.
That s why West Burlington High School senior Shelby Ryan has made it her mission to ensure her school s restrooms are never without free menstrual hygiene products.
Ryan, who first joined Girl Scout Troop 9180 in kindergarten and has achieved the Girl Scouts of America rank of ambassador, embarked on her Girls Helping Girls project for the Gold Award (the equivalent to the Boy Scouts of America s Eagle Award), which is given to senior and ambassador scouts who tackle issues and drive lasting change in their communities, after Jenell Martin, a member of WBHS SOAR committee, which oftentimes meets with student council, told her about period poverty.
