Next month will mark a year since the global cruise industry shuddered to a halt as coronavirus spread. Despite some hope that holidays at sea would return in a meaningful way, ships remain largely free from passengers, with only river cruising in Europe mounting a significant comeback in 2020.

Will I need a vaccine to cruise?
If youâre hoping to sail with Saga Cruises, then yes. In January the over-50s specialists announced that any customer booked to travel with Saga Holidays must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 at least 14 days before departure. This was a first from a UK cruise line.
River sailings look increasingly likely to lead the cruise industryâs recovery this year as rising numbers of ocean cruise lines push back their start dates to late spring and beyond.
Several companies are already reporting heightened interest from customers attracted by the smaller size of riverboats, which hold 200 passengers at most; the proximity of Europeâs most popular rivers to the UK, which can be easily be reached by train rather than flying; and the ease and flexibility of exploring destinations along the riverbanks.
A number of river cruise lines, including A-Rosa, Nicko Cruises and CroisiEurope were among the first to start sailing again last summer, though other companies which depend heavily on the US market put off resuming operations until this spring.
