This weeks episode of the Classified History Podcast is about the Old Gilchrist County Jail. The jail is located in Trenton Florida about 45 minutes west of Gainesville. A lot of mystery surrounds the jail. There are said to be several ghost that haunt the property. But it’s been very hard to find the actual historical records of the building and any records of what happened at the jail. But I can tell you it is a spooky location that has a sorted past. Our guest Arlene Hale has a connection with ghosts. She has owned the old jail for more than 12 years and her ghost hunting group called The Old Gilchrist County Jail Ghost Hunters have been investigating there for a long time.
With overgrown vines and loquat trees blocking the building, it’s easy to miss the aging historic property at 313 NW Second St. in Trenton, though for many who enter it’s unforgettable.
The Old Gilchrist County Jail, in operation for 40 years during the 20th century, is up for sale. And in addition to visits from prospective buyers, ghosts of former inmates and others who died on the premises are said to haunt the property.
The eight-cell, eight-bath property comprises a little more than 2,000 square feet and also includes an attached jailer’s house, added in 1965. The asking price is $140,000.
Arlene Hale, who lives between Newberry and Trenton, has owned the property for about 12 years.

An old jail in Trenton, Florida, that’s said to be haunted is on the market. The decommissioned Gilchrist County Jail, which operated from 1928 to 1968, recently hit the market for $139,999. It’s listed as an eight-bedroom, eight-bath unit on a quarter of an acre. The listing claims the property draws thrill seekers from all over the world eager to encounter the “heavy paranormal activity.” It says, “See apparitions walking around the grounds in broad daylight. Possibly the spirits within will voice what’s on their minds when you arrive before you even make it inside. Homes to years of grisly stand-offs, killings and much more it’s no surprise this location is loaded with visible and audible paranormal activity.” Realtor photos show rusty cells, water damage and graffiti inside.
