In the early part of the 18th century in america, early painters without much background and much training, we call them the limbners, made ambitious but tentative efforts to capture likenesses on canvas because portraiture was the only way of doing that those days and it was really the most important type of painting in the colonies. So this whole idea of a Group Portrait is something new, much beyond what the early limbners in america could do. Its a baroque idea of a Group Portrait is a hard thing to carry off. This is another Group Portrait that copley painted once he went to england. Again, this is a very sophisticated effort on his part to capture a modernday history scene, a modernday something that actually happened. This painting was commissioned by brook watson when he was the lord mayor of london. This was something that happened to him as a young man when he was on a merchant ship and they were outside of havana, in havana harbor when he decided to go for a swim in the water and was attacked by a shark. Brooks you lived under the shadow of the chinese exclusion act, which is a law passed in 1882 that actually surveyed all chinese immigration to the United States. People forget that today the chinese were once looked upon as undesirable, just because of their race. Chineseamericans growing up at were born in they the United States, they could be amounts, and the tiny allowed in could not naturalize, they could not become citizens. In many ways, you are marginal, you are not a real citizen. When they went out into the world, they could not get a job. The methodists actually hired me right after i came back from vietnam doing my alternative service there with the Mennonite Central Committee in the middle of the war, in the middle of a war zone, helping children learn to read and write their own language.
