Nothing was ever thrown away. There were letters under the bed, in the dressing table, all covered in dust. But, then, Sylvia Rich was from that letter-writing generation. She had sisters in Birmingham and Bedfordshire, and they used to write to one another every week; she kept all their correspondence. She also kept the carbon copies of every letter she had written while working for decades as a secretary at the BBC after the war. By the time she died in 1996, aged 81, the tiny flat she had lived in for most of her life was full of paper.
