Gov. Gavin Newsom s pledge to nominate a Black woman to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein even though the senior senator says she has no plans to retire caught the eyes of many political observers, including the daughter of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Christine Pelosi, an outspoken longtime Democratic Party operative, took to Twitter to accuse the governor of pushing Feinstein out to aid his chances in a recall election that appears likely to occur later this year.

THE BUZZ A LONG TIME GONE A year ago this week, we changed forever: Schools were ordered closed, sports games canceled, theme parks shuttered. The word “quarantine” became a part of the vocabulary of Californians’ lives. Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state emergency shortly after what was believed to be the first death of a coronavirus patient in California. The World Health Organization officially declared the spread of the Covid-19 virus a pandemic. A week later, on March 19, Newsom declared a statewide stay-at-home order.
The conventional analysis is that Newsom waited until there was better news to report on COVID-19 and timed the speech to coincide with when recall sponsors are ready to submit enough voter signatures to presumably qualify their effort for the ballot, columnist George Skelton writes.
