The store they were in used to be a bank; the door the boy had closed was intended to secure a vault. Giavanna’s mother turned to store employees for help, but they knew no way to open the door. Rescuers decided to cut through an 18-inch-thick wall to get the girl out. They used hammer drills, the Jaws of Life, and various cutters. And fire officials didn’t just use the tools: they used them up and turned to a rental place for more. By the time Giavanna was pulled out through the hole, upwards of 60 first responders had arrived.
