The Giant Mine Oversight Board is working with a Montreal-based technology company to incorporate samples of the highly-toxic arsenic trioxide dust buried at the former N.W.T. gold mine into glass.
Last week, the federal government revealed that cleaning up Yellowknife’s Giant Mine is now projected to cost $4.38 billion. This is, by one measure, greater than the mine’s estimated total revenues during its operation.
For the first time since remediation worked started in 2021, media were invited to take a look at what's been going on at the Giant Mine site. Officials said the project is going to take longer and cost more than expected.
The latest report from the Giant Mine Oversight Board says that despite a five-year socio-economic plan for the project and annually published employment, procurement and training data, the benefits generated for local people are still "unclear."
