Five people accused of having tricked an elderly woman into paying them thousands of euro as part of a romance fraud have been granted bail.
The five accused – former footballer Sunday Eboh, Alexandra Pace, Collins Eguavoen, Marvis Iyeke and Tony Ogbonna – were arrested in February after police discovered that a woman had been tricked into sending €58,000 in various transactions to somebody she had met online.
The woman was ostensibly sending the money to a US soldier deployed in Afghanistan. But investigators discovered that the money was being deposited in local bank accounts and eventually arrested the five suspects.
Two further suspects were later also arrested in connection with the case.

Yorgen Fenech messaged a pilot with Falcon jets with an urgent request for a private flight on the eve of his arrest, a court has heard.
It was also revealed that Fenech was trying to transfer cash from Dubai and other places through Wings Development, the company previously named 17 Black.
An eyewitness who saw Daphne Caruana Galizia’s car explode has told the court of the horrific scene he saw on the day of the murder.
Francis Sant, a Bidnija resident, was driving up the hill towards the hamlet at around 3pm on 16 October 2017 when he spotted Caruana Galizia’s white car coming towards him.
Sant testified in court this morning as the compilation of evidence against Yorgen Fenech continued. Fenech is accused of masterminding the murder.
Speaking in a soft voice, Sant recalled how Caruana Galizia’s car suddenly slowed down and he sensed something was wrong.
“The person inside the car appeared to be panicking. It made me afraid. I heard a small bang, like fireworks. Then I heard a piercing scream,” Sant told the court.
Three psychiatrists who analysed Daphne Caruana Galizia murder middleman Melvin Theuma have presented their findings to the court in the compilation of evidence against Yorgen Fenech.
However, the findings as to whether Theuma is fit to continue testifying cannot be reported on court order.
Today s sitting was the first for 2021. Fenech is accused of masterminding the murder of Caruana Galizia in 2017 and compilation of evidence proceedings are ongoing.
Theuma is the key witness in the proceedings after having been given a presidential pardon to tell all. He attempted suicide last summer.
