CHESTER city centre had more business openings than closures in 2020 – in spite of the coronavirus pandemic. The city s retail scene is also taking on a new look, with more independent retailers, venues and eateries taking the place of chain stores and restaurants. While the city was not immune from the devastating economic effects of the ongoing pandemic – which even now sees all non-essential retailers forced to keep their doors closed during lockdown – Chester BID has revealed how the high street is changing. The business improvement district has now launched an Independent Business Guide in response to the dramatic change in the city’s retail and hospitality sector – and in their continued battle to save the high street during and post-pandemic.

THE team at Chester BID has announced the winners of their festive window competition. The competition was initiated to bring the Christmas cheer back into the city after a year of lockdowns and uncertainty for retailers and hospitality. It has seen over 50 of the city retailers battle it out, in the run up to Christmas, in a bid to create the most festive windows. The Judges Award, overseen by The Rotary Club of Chester and Cheshire photographer, Kat Hannon, awarded a gold, silver and bronze award to both independents and chains. They marked each window on overall impression, creativity and execution to determine the winners. The Judges Gold winners are Italian restaurant, Stile Napoletano and Cancer Research UK on Foregate Street.
