The tradition of Mashq, a wooden slate fundamental to Kashmiri schooling, has faced challenges and waning popularity over time. Initially a cornerstone of education, Mashq fostered writing skills, coordination, and concentration, accessible to all students. Teachers assessed and corrected handwriting, instilling competition and camaraderie among students. With roots tracing back to the Indus Valley civilization, Mashq held cultural and educational significance. However, technological advancements led to its gradual replacement by modern writing tools, diminishing handwriting's importance. Nostalgia for Mashq persists, highlighting its role in fostering calligraphy and traditional learning methods. Efforts to revive this tradition amidst technological dominance remain imperative for preserving handwriting's artistry and educational benefits.
