Beirut, Lebanon – Interpol has issued three international arrest notices for the owner and captain of a ship that brought 2,750 tonnes of explosive material into Beirut’s port seven years before it exploded in the deadly August 2020 blast.
A judicial source told Al Jazeera on Tuesday Public Prosecutor Ghassan Khoury received a letter informing him the so-called “red notices” had been issued, based on the request of Lebanon’s judiciary.
Those named are Igor Grechushkin, a Russian businessman and apparent owner of the MV Rhosus that brought the ammonium nitrate into Beirut in late 2013, as well as the ship’s captain at the time, Borys Prokoshew, who is also Russian.

Two of the former Lebanese government ministers charged with criminal negligence in connection with the Beirut port explosion in August that killed 200 people and injured thousands said they would not appear for questioning before the judge in the case.
Prime Minister Hassan Diab, former public works ministers Ghazi Zaeiter and Youssef Fenianos and former Finance Minister Ali Hasan Khalil were charged in the explosion. Zaeiter and Khalil said they were not notified of Wednesday’s hearing. They also have petitioned the court to remove Sawan from the case over “legitimate suspicions” regarding his neutrality.

The lead Beirut blast investigator Monday scheduled new questioning sessions for caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab and three former ministers after they refused to cooperate, a judicial source said.
Lead investigator of Beirut blast, Judge Fadi Sawwan was supposed to go to the Grand Serail Monday to question Diab as a suspect for negligence that led to the Aug. 4 explosion which resulted in more than 200 deaths and thousands of injuries.
