The AlphaTauri driver claimed victory in an eventful Italian Grand Prix last September, admittedly helped considerably by a penalty issued to Sir Lewis Hamilton. But nevertheless, Gasly took full advantage of the opportunity presented to him in holding off a stern challenge from Carlos Sainz in the McLaren, with Lance Stroll completing a thoroughly unexpected top three.

Emmanuel Macron was phoning Gasly to congratulate him after he became the first French driver for 24 years to win a Formula 1 race, since Olivier Panis won the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix in similarly surprising circumstances. Instead of speaking to Gasly directly, the President left a voicemail message which the 24-year-old picked up after he had broken down the race with his colleagues in the AlphaTauri team.

Gasly was chosen as the driver to replace the Renault-bound Daniel Ricciardo at Red Bull, but his partnership with Max Verstappen lasted just 12 races before Red Bull demoted him back to AlphaTauri (then known as Toro Rosso) for the remaining nine events of the 2019 season. The Frenchman, much like his now former team-mate Daniil Kvyat, came back strong with the Red Bull sister team and was capped in wonderful style during the 2020 season with a shock win at the Italian Grand Prix.
