Fire at illegal hostel in Latvia kills eight © Reuters Most of the victims of Wednesday s fire are believed to be foreign nationals Eight people have been killed and several others seriously hurt in a fire at an illegal hostel in the Latvian capital Riga, officials say. Firefighters were called to an apartment on the top floor of a six-storey building in the city s Merkela Street in the early hours of Wednesday. At least 24 people were evacuated from the burning building, some suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. Most of the victims are believed to be foreign tourists, Riga s mayor said.

Manchester fire chief warns against ‘reckless behaviour’ after wildfires Maya Wolfe-Robinson © Provided by The Guardian Photograph: Oli Scarff/AFP/Getty Images A fire chief has called on visitors to the countryside to refrain from “reckless behaviour” on days out as lockdown eases, after a large fire broke out on Marsden Moor over the weekend, along with fires in Cumbria and Bury. Dave Russel, Greater Manchester fire and rescue service’s chief fire officer, described a very busy 72 hours for the force, with a major incident being declared at the Bury fire. The wildfire on Marsden Moors, West Yorkshire, began on Sunday evening, just after 7pm, and developed into to a mile-long blaze. Ten pumps plus specialist wildfire units were dispatched to tackle it, with crews from both West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester dispatched to help.
