Africa surpasses 100,000 COVID deaths
Africa surpasses 100,000 COVID-19 deaths Cameron Jenkins © Getty Images Africa surpasses 100,000 COVID-19 deaths Coronavirus-related deaths in Africa surpassed 100,000 on Friday, as a second wave of coronavirus infections overwhelmed hospitals, according to reports. A total of 100,354 deaths in connection to the novel coronavirus have been reported from the continent and are comparably lower than Europe s reported 900,000 and North America s over half a million, according to Reuters. Though numbers have not been as high as other continents, Africa s surge in coronavirus deaths has been led by its southern region and South Africa s more contagious COVID-19 variant. The increased number [of infections] has led to many severe cases and some of the countries really found it quite difficult to cope, Richard Mihigo, coordinator of the immunization program at the World Health Organization s Africa office, told the news outlet.

The idea, which has been talked about for years, is to create one of the world s biggest free-trade areas, opening up a market of more than 1.2 billion people, with a combined GDP of more than $3 trillion (£2 trillion). This would create business opportunities - and jobs - across Africa, while reducing the cost of some goods in the shops and markets.

Africa must be seen with lenses other than our national security
Africa must be seen with lenses other than our national security Mike Rogers, opinion contributor © Getty Images Africa must be seen with lenses other than our national security An American hero has been laid to rest after he was killed in an operation in Somalia. The death of this officer should spark the conversation about foreign policy toward Africa, especially as a new administration will soon occupy the Oval Office. Our presence in Somalia demonstrates both the success and challenge of foreign policy toward Africa, which the recent withdrawal plans by our current president may undermine. That announcement has sent the wrong signal to our partners in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and all across Africa. The decision was made without any consultation or consideration and will almost certainly cause our partners in West Africa and in the Maghreb to doubt the commitment of the United States to the fight against Islamist extremism. Presence certainly matters so w
