Longhorns looking to avoid February struggles in upcoming stretch
today!
Texas is 13-19 in the month of February since 2017 under head coach Shaka Smart. That includes a 5-4 mark at the end of the 2019-20 season beginning with four straight losses and ending with a five-game win streak.
Smart finds his team at a familiar juncture. COVID circumstances and the quality of recent opponents are factors, but Texas is already 0-2 in February with what is Smart’s best-ever roster. In a ‘prove it’ season where Texas was once in one-seed conversations, Texas is 3-4 against teams that were ranked at the time of their matchup and just fell out of the AP top 10.

With the hire of Montana State head coach Jeff Choate as inside linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator, Steve Sarkisianâs staff is now complete. There are some helpful breadcrumbs in some of the title designations and known pay scales to deduce how this staff is going to work together and what the philosophy and approach will be on defense.
Choate has worked with Pete Kwiatkowski in the past, both at Boise State working with the linebackers and then at Washington helping with the defensive line and special teams. The timing of his hire, coming off the heels of Mike Stoops reports and then a resounding backlash to those reports, suggests Choate is Peteâs guy. A brief glimpse at Montana State film reveals some schematic sympatico as well.
Shaka Smart tests positive for COVID-19
Texas head coach Shaka Smart announced Monday he has tested positive for COVID-19.
“I tested positive for COVID and am in isolation away from our team and my family,” Smart said in a statement. “I am working remotely and look forward to rejoining our team in person when it is safe to do so.”
The Longhorns have not played since January 16 when they defeated Kansas State, 82-67. Matchups at Iowa State and at TCU were postponed due to COVID issues in their program.
Texas’ game versus Oklahoma scheduled for Tuesday is still on, according to a UT spokesman. Associate head coach KT Turner will act as head coach in Smart’s absence.
