Lebanese authorities thwarted on Saturday an attempt to smuggle dozens of Syrians from northern Lebanon towards Europe by sea. In a statement, the military said it arrested five Syrians at a checkpoint in the northern town of Selaata, for planning the illegal trip from Batroun. The army said 49 Syrians, including women and children, were arrested at the Deir Ammar checkpoint as they were headed to their departure from Batroun. Meanwhile, the Markazia news agency quoted sources as saying that 80 people have been arrested so far.
Lebanon's bank depositors reportedly will be allowed to start withdrawing their long-strapped savings starting next week, but rather in installments. Strapped since the eruption of a sharp financial crisis in 2019, depositors are to be able to make cash withdrawals from their savings in dollars at their real value, without deductions, but in installments.
Morocco and Germany agreed to launch their Multidimensional Strategic Dialogue, which will form the basis for moving forward within the framework of bilateral relations and promoting coherence in the various fields of bilateral cooperation. The announcement came at the end of a meeting between Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, who was on a working visit to Germany, and his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock.
