I was in the jail for about 20 years. In the jail, there is approximately 1117 of the individuals that have a serious Mental Illness, that being defined as someone with a psychotic disorder were a major Mood Disorder like bipolar. About a month ago we did a oneday snapshot to try to get an exact percentage, and that date it was 14 , which was around 170 individuals. One thing to note, people with Mental Illness tend to stay in a jail longer than those in general population. It is due to a multitude of reasons. Things like the individuals may struggle to understand the court proceedings. They may struggle to work with their attorney in their own defense. They also are frequently homeless. They also dont have the resources to get out on bail or they dont meet the criteria to get on their own reco
