Stress from trying to navigate VEC leaves pregnant Virginia mom with premature contractions

RICHMOND, Va. The CBS6 Problem Solvers continue to get calls and emails from Virginians trying to sort out their benefit claims with the Virginia Employment Commission. WalletHub, the financial website, ranks Virginia near the bottom nationally in how quickly employment appeals and issues are resolved.
A Midlothian woman can attest to that: filing an employment claim based on two W-2 forms from last year, which were filed without issue on her federal and state tax returns, seems to have somehow thrown the VEC for a loop.
City Manager John Connet announced his decision today. Myhand will begin in Hendersonville on Feb. 15.
The search for a chief to replace Herbert Blake began in August. There were 62 applicants; none of which were current employees of the city s police department. The search was advertised twice to get a “significant applicant pool,” Connet said. We knew that this was going to be a difficult recruitment period, he said. One of the toughest jobs, or responsibilities, in our country right now is being a chief of police.
Myhand and Gerald Childress, the other finalist for the job, faced internal investigations while on the job. Childress was later demoted. Myhand was placed on administrative leave in November amid the investigation, which is ongoing, and very little detail has been provided about it.
Blair Myhand, police chief for the city of Clayton, will be the city’s next chief. He starts Feb. 15 at a salary of $107,000.
A police officer for 26 years, Myhand started with the Metro Washington, DC, and moved to Apex. In May 2017, he became police chief of Clayton.
Myhand had been placed on non-disciplinary leave from the Clayton police department in what he described as shift in the political wind. Connet acknowledged that political differences sometimes do arise in the relationship between elected officials and high ranking administrators.
“We work for elected officials and it is their community, Connet said. There will be times that city managers or police chiefs may make elected officials unhappy.” He said the leave Myhand faced did not concern the city when they looked into it that it came down to philosophic differences. “Clayton a few years ago hired a manager and police chief that they wanted to be very professional and raise the standards.
