Greek revolution fighter Georgios Tertsetis died on this day in 1874 Search for: Born on the island of Zakynthos, Georgios Tertsetis (1800-April 15, 1874) was a fighter in the 1821 Greek Revolution and later and better remembered as a historian, politician, poet, writer, judge and philosopher. He completed his schooling in Zakynthos, together with Panos Kolokotronis, son of Theodoros, a circumstance which would prove poignant in both Tertestis’ and Theodoros’ lives many years later. Following this, he left for Italy to further his studies, but at the outbreak of the 1821 Revolution he hurried back to the Peloponnese to join in the fighting, where he fell ill and retreated to the island of Kalamos.

On this day in 1857, Greek poet Dionysios Solomos passes away Search for: Dionysios Solomos (Διονύσιος Σολωμός) is considered the national poet of Greece- not only because he wrote the national anthem, but also because he contributed to the preservation of earlier poetic tradition and highlighted its usefulness to modern literature. Born in Zakynthos on April 8, 1798, he was the illegitimate child of a wealthy count, Nikolaos Solomos, and his housekeeper, Angeliki Nikli. In November 1815, Solomos enrolled at Pavia University’s Faculty of Law (Italy), and graduated in 1817. From young, he was interested in the flourishing Italian literature and began writing poems in that language.
