Before the infamous hurricane broke the levies in New Orleans, it made landfall as a powerful Category 1 storm Aug. 25 on Hollywood Beach. Hurricane season is less than two months away. Unfortunately, hurricanes and tropical storms don’t care. Mostly, because their big circulating engines of pressure, air and moisture are incapable of feeling anything with regard to the timeliness of schedules, but also because sometimes Mother Nature just has other plans. Florida is uniquely situated in the United States jutting out from the rest of the country and bifurcating the Atlantic from the Gulf of Mexico. Meaning hurricanes have plenty of opportunity to hit the Sunshine State at any given time.

Hurricane season is less than two months away. But hurricanes can and have struck outside of the June 1 start date. In 1863, Florida was hit by the strongest hurricane observed outside of the Atlantic hurricane season.
