Farmers Against Hunger to run land stewardship center in BurlCo

DELRAN  For more than a century, the 120 acres of land now known as Laurel Run Park was home to one of the largest peach orchards in New Jersey.  And 15 years after agricultural operations ceased on this stretch of land off Creek Road, farming will make a comeback to help fight food insecurity and educate the public.  The nonprofit New Jersey Farmers Against Hunger will soon be operating its first ever land stewardship center on three acres at the farm-turned-park thanks to a new partnership between Burlington County, New Jersey Farmers Against Hunger and the New Jersey Agricultural Society.  “This particular building and this particular property are going to do so much to help us extend our efforts to help the citizens of New Jersey,” said Al Murray, executive director of the New Jersey Agricultural Society.

Special election for Wrightstown mayor results show Timberman ahead

His resignation came too late to remove him from the November ballot in an unusual election year when the majority of ballots cast were by mail. He was only the mayoral candidate to appear on the ballot, and received the most votes, 113 to 24 write-in votes. As a result, the borough was scheduled to hold a special election for mayor on Jan. 12, but Gov. Phil Murphy would postpone special elections across the state to April 20 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Wrightstown to hold special election for mayor Tuesday

The borough will hold a special mayoral election on Tuesday to replace former mayor Thomas Harper.  Current Acting Mayor David Scott Timberman, a Republican, will face Douglas Arden Davis for the seat. Harper resigned on Sept. 23 when he was banned from holding public office due to being charged with lying to investigators earlier that month. Zoning proposal could bring 1,000-plus residential units to Westampton

WESTAMPTON A proposal to rezone nearly 90 acres along Burlington-Mount Holly Road could bring over 1,000 residential units to the township. The township committee recently introduced an ordinance to establish the Agrihood Mixed Use (AMU) Zone at 1960 Burlington-Mount Holly Road, the 88-acre parcel that is currently home to the historic Hancock Farm, as part of the township s affordable housing compliance plan as required by the state. The proposed zone will allow for the development of a minimum of 1,144 multi-family apartments/condos with a required 20% set aside of 228 affordable units centered around the 10-acre historic farm. “Development of the AMU Zone will create a unique destination by supporting the continuation of agriculture and agricultural-related uses and activities, including preservation, reuse and retention of the existing farmhouse and historic barns, the proposal states.
