Cristina’s person Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) spent much of the long-running medical drama’s 17th season in critical condition because of COVID-19. Keeping each other safe on set while paying tribute to the front-line heroes and first responders has been a challenge and a privilege. Station 19, which has also been renewed, but Ellen Pompeo has extended her contract and will continue to play Dr. Meredith Grey.
This is big news, as Pompeo, who also serves as a producer on the series, seemingly held the fate of the show in her hands. Just before season 17 began, Pompeo speculated that it could be the last season during an interview with
Variety. “I mean, this is the last year of my contract right now. I don’t know that this is the last year? But it could very well could be,” she teased at the time.

Giacomo Gianniotti – who plays Andrew DeLuca on Grey’s Anatomy – has addressed the show’s future amid speculation that series 17 could be its last.

The much-loved medical drama continues to have a huge following of fans since it first aired on ABC in 2005, but lead star Ellen Pompeo recently disclosed conversations about the possibility of eventually wrapping it up.
Gianniotti has said that the show has already surpassed its expectations of longevity, and proven that it could continue for as along as the creatives behind it want to keep it going.
“You ask if there’s still life left in a show after maybe six or seven years,” he told Digital Spy. “For a show that’s in its 17th, I think we’ve sort of passed [asking the question] at this point.
