MV Bulk Freedom
A four day ordeal, consisting of intense negotiations between the Cayman Islands Government and Cuban migrants that disappeared at sea and were rescued by a bulk carrier en route to the Panama Canal, has ended.
The situation began to unfold on April 5, when the Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control Service (CBC) confirmed that electronic monitoring devices that monitored locally-based Cuban migrants had lost connection at sea, and as a result CBC had been unable to verify their whereabouts. This confirmation was made, following reports received from the Department of Public Safety Communications (DPSC) the night before.
