The names of many villages, railroad stations and post offices in Jackson County reflect mostly modest histories . But the origins of some of these names can be murky, deceptive or incorrect.
OVER the course of three days in the summer of 1882 the eyes of the English and Welsh cricketing world were set on a small corner of Montgomeryshire. The visit of the English United XI brought some of the stars of the Victorian age to Lymore to take on a team of Montgomery cricketers, bolstered by the addition of several players drafted in from rival clubs for the occasion. The event was celebrated at the time, with the local newspaper writing ‘It is some time since, if ever, such deeds of valour have been enrolled upon the annals of the cricket field in the county of Montgomery as was achieved on the grounds of Lymore Park, Montgomery, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday last’.
WILMINGTON Gerald Summers, 66, passed away Friday, Feb. 12, 2021.
His love and memories will remain in the hearts of his daughters, Tyana Summers and Tykeeta Summers, both of Raleigh; siblings, Robert Lee Summers and George Summers, both of Baltimore, Maryland, Deloris Summers and Shirley Ann Harris, both of Richmond, and Emmer Davis of Detroit, Michigan; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Public viewing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 19, at Davis Funeral Home, 901 S. 5th Ave., Wilmington, NC 28401. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20, at Calvary Memorial Cemetery, 800 N. 11th St., Wilmington.
