I want to talk about the railroads in pennsylvania. I have written three books on the railroads. They were from east to west, the philadelphiawilmington baltimore railroad. The northern central railway, harrisburg to baltimore. The third key railroad that ran between maryland and pennsylvania during the civil war. The Cumberland Valley railroad will be the subject of our talk today. All three railroads were targeted by the army during the civil war. Two had their bridges burned near baltimore from 1861, 18

What makes your book the real custer . The easiest way to answer that question is to say that is what the publisher wanted. That is the title. I think it is better to view it not as a conclusion, like this is the real custer, but more like a question. Who was the real custer . What we know about this guy. Little bighorn is so pervasive when we talk about George Custer, the whole man is the mistakes he made on that day. That is not the case. Yet a whole life and a whole character and he was a whole person. The book is about trying to get to the root of that question. If we can strip away all the things that have been written since then, all of the history, Everything Else and just talk about the man himself. That is what it is supposed to be about.
