The National publishes censored blog which made the case for independence

THE National is today publishing a report that Downing Street definitely doesn’t want you to see. The article, originally published on the London School of Economics (LSE) British Politics and Policy blog, concludes that Scotland can be economically successful after independence. Co-authored by a UK Government adviser, it was mysteriously deleted on April 1, shortly after The National published a story about it. On April 2, a message appeared on the LSE website stating: “We have been asked by the authors to take this article down temporarily. We will be making it available again as soon as we are able to and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

THE deletion of a blog post which talked up the economic prospects of Scottish independence has sparked further alarm calls about the Tory government endangering freedom of speech. The SNP have condemned Downing Street “suppression” and say the episode underlines that Boris Johnson’s administration is “terrified” of growing support for a Yes vote. It comes after a high-profile scientist warned the removal of the article, co-authored by a UK Government adviser, spelled danger for academic freedoms. A LEADING academic has warned Scottish democracy is under attack as he admonished the “authoritarian” UK Government amid a row over the mysterious disappearance of a blog post about independence. Dr Mike Galsworthy – a visiting researcher at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and co-founder of Scientists for EU – raised the alarm over the censuring of scientists and warned Scotland in particular is at risk of Westminster’s dirty tricks. The blog post, published on the London School of Economics (LSE) website, was co-authored by UK Government economic adviser Geoffrey Chapman, who works with the Department for International Trade.
