Longtime Birmingham volunteer Pat Watt dies

Many longtime Birmingham area community members remember the leadership roles Pat Watt held beginning in the 1970s. Watt died recently in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, where she lived for the last two decades. “Prior to her involvement in city affairs, she was president of the South Poppleton Homeowners Association,” remembers Geri Rinschler. “Pat went on to become a city commissioner in 1974, serving as mayor-pro tem in 1978,” says Rinschler. This was a turbulent time in Birmingham history when there was a controversy about building the Baldwin House senior living facility. Watt was recalled along with other commission members. In spite of being recalled, Watt remained active in working on the approval and funding of the senior housing project along with the committee of persons from four churches.
