Why there s nothing like Christmas on a Cunard cruise ship

When I was invited to join Cunardâs Queen Elizabeth as a guest speaker for a pre-Christmas cruise in Australia last year, I hesitated.Â
Surely, Christmas on a cruise ship would mean hectic, organised jollity, making my festive spirits sink deeper than the Mariana Trench? And many would say a hot sunny Christmas is just ânot rightâ. Well, my son and family live in Sydney, so Iâm very happy singing carols in a swimsuit as Santa surfs onto Bondi beach.Â
But coming from the chilly UK, itâs still disconcerting hearing Itâs Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas as we arrived at Melbourne airport to 30°C heat. A sign read: âWelcome to the summer festivalâ. No tinsel, tree or fairy lights. You would never guess that Christmas was only just over a week away. Â
