the sense that everybody sort of had anticipated that the president would go first, and of course that s not the way it worked. but we all got together as this unfolded over the last few weeks and, of course, we are aware of what was going on, and the sentiment, the emotion that s connected with that really is partly you can see some of it. you have been watching the television broadcast and the interviews that a lot of us are doing. it s been remarkable in sort of bringing out of everybody memories of what we had all been through. a kinder, gentler time? it was kinder, gentler. this was a guy who happened to be there at those crucial moments when we really needed somebody with his experience and his abilities, diplomatic capability and so forth. i can remember when he sent me to the gulf, the first weekend
people about doing business in russia and the kremlin knew he was lying, gave the kremlin a hold over him. one question is does the kremlin have a hold over him. possibly a cease-fire in the trade war with china. one group likes it, the market. dow futures pointing way up this morning after a weekend meeting. president trump and she strike a temporary compromise. now saying they have 90 days to decide what is next. the big question is are they really just kicking the can down the road? we begin remembering the extraordinary life and legacy of a man dedicated to service as a navy pilot during world war ii, as the nation s leader in the white house and as the ultimate family man. a man whose call for a gentler, kinder nation is echoing across the country as we prepare to say good-bye. i have an incredible team spread across the nation to reflect on all of it. in the next hour, the former
campaign chairman or manager, that was good for the country. and i think he drew a line between campaigning and what you do when you re in a position of governing. that was very obvious in 1988, where his campaign was pretty vicious, the infamous willie horton ad. he questioned michael dukakis patriotism. then his inaugural speech, he promised to be kinder and gentler. and nancy reagan reportedly wondered kindler and gentler than whom? and maybe he was talking about himself actually, because again, he drew that line. now he was president, and he was going to step up to the responsibilities of the office. and he certainly did that with the tax hike, which really did set the stage for the balanced budget that bill clinton was able to achieve. and that line no longer exists between campaigning and governing. and i hope that we can somehow
states, george herbert walker bush, has died. he was 94 years old. he passed away overnight in houston after several months of declining health. his death comes little more than seven months after his wife, barbara bush s, passing at the age of 92. president bush is remembered as a public servant and statesman, a world war ii combat pilot, and a dedicated family man. former president george w. bush called his father, quote, a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. jeb bush jr. said, quote, nothing gave me gampy more joy than service to others. his leadership taught us to be kinder and gentler. jamie gangel sat down with more members of the bush family to talk about their father and grandfather. reporter: give me some words to describe your father. my dad is just the kindest
host chris wallace as well as i want to brief one of the tweets that went out from one of his grandchildren saying nothing gave him more joy in service to others especially supporting and caring for those who risked making the ultimate sacrifice every day. his leadership taught us to be kinder and gentler, to love each other, we will miss him dearly and that will be an interesting conversation for this country to have - we talk about it will likely be very bipartisan as we remember the life of this very special man and former president. absolutely. there is a sense in the country now that it is a 0-sum game, one side wins, the other side loses and that wasn t the way that george hw bush viewed life and certainly not the way he viewed politics. he was very competitive. very tough.
