Israeli Filmmaker banned from Durban Film Fest

OPEN LETTER TO ISMAIL MAHOMED AND THE DURBAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: My name is Samuel Hyde, I have worked both in the theatre industry and currently work as an engineer/producer in the music business. I studied the Holocaust and Anti-Semitism at a high academic level through the Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre where I spent 2 years volunteering and working. As a Jewish and Israel rights activist I work daily with Palestinians on the ground at erasing false narratives, ending the zero-sum game and bringing unity between our two communities. My commitment to activism and social justice extends beyond my own community – I have worked in close collaboration with the Umubano Foundation to educate on the Rwandan Genocide and produced a theatre production that used genocide as it’s backdrop to address rape being used as a weapon of war.

OPINION | David Unterhalter and BDS: Not the first campaign against Jews being judges

Associated Press/Jacques Brinon Charisse Zeifer t ask why would an association with the representative body of a person’s community disqualify them from sitting on the Constitutional Court following BDS s statement on David Unterhalter? South Africa is both a community of communities and a republic of individual citizens. One of the core common values that unites it as a nation is a shared respect for diversity of beliefs, histories and cultures. Individuals have multiple and complex identities which they choose, which they create, and which they inherit.   In this, the South African Jewish community is no different. It is heterogenous and contradictory, prone to ever shifting disagreements and robust debates about everything.
