supreme allied commander, retired general wesley clark, a cnn military analyst. general clark, thanks for joining us. first, you re the former nato supreme allied commander. how significant is it to see today that finland and sweden formally have applied to join this nato alliance? i think it s a very, very significant step. i think it s very, very important diplomatically that they get in. it s the kind of diplomatic move that really puts pressure on putin. but also, it has military effectiveness because we have been worried about the defensibility of estonia, latvia, lithuania. now what we have with finland and sweden if they come in, is a much more coherent defense in the boli baltic sea area. as soon as finland and sweden took this truly historic step, turkey, a member of nato, blocked the start of these talks. could this be a bumpy process? i think it s going to be very
nato about to expand, not break up, as he hopes. he s lashing out at finland and sweden today over their new moves to join the alliance after decade of neutrality, warning it will cause a response. but he s trying to play off like it wouldn t be a threat to russia. cnn military analyst general wesley clark. general clark, sweden announcing their intention to join nato. how big a deal is that? i think it s a great thing that they re joining. of course they ve worked closely with nato for years, as has finland. and it was always a very close relationship. but they weren t actually members of the decision making body. we did do joint military exercises and so forth. i think this does improve the security position of the three baltic states, latvia, es stone i can t, lithuania. this gives nato the potential in a time of crisis to have greater control over the baltic sea.
