Longest-serving SANDF chief visits Western Cape troops on farewell tour Share Cape Town - Outgoing Chief of the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) General Solly Shoke on Wednesday visited the Simon’s Town Naval Base accompanied by his successor Lieutenant-General Rudzani Maphwanya whose appointment into the position was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last month. Shoke’s visit fell under his outgoing tour as the Chief of the SANDF, which officially began in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. The aim of the tour, according to the SANDF, was to afford Shoke, who s the country’s longest-serving SANDF chief, the opportunity to visit various military units across the country and bid farewell to SANDF members.

The first stop for outgoing CSANDF General Solly Shoke on his end-of-duty tour was North West late in April with stop number two set for Northern Cape this week according to the Directorate Corporate Communication (DCC) of the national defence force. Shoke will be accompanied by his successor, current Lieutenant General Rudzani Maphwanya, to the provincial capital Kimberley on Wednesday as he says farewell to provincial commanders and introduces them to Maphwanya. Potchefstroom was Shoke’s first end-of-duty tour stop when he called on the SA Army’s’ Extended Command Cadre (ECC) conference. He also had sight of concept designs for new SA Army dress, including a replacement for the daily camouflage workwear.

When General Solly Shoke hands the symbolic instrument of command to his successor on 28 May, he leaves the office of SA National Defence Force (SANDF) Chief as its longest serving occupant. He took office on 2 May 2011 after a stint as SA Army Chief that started in 2004 and when he retires will have been chief of the national defence force for just on 10 years. Shoke’s successor is currently the top man at the Joint Operations Division where Lieutenant General Rudzani Maphwanya remains in charge until receiving his fourth star and becoming the only general in the SANDF.
