Tarpon Bay Explorers reported that its Breakfast Cruises and the Touch Tanks are back to normal operations. In light of the pandemic, it had put the cruises on hold and the tank were switched to hands-off aquarium presentations, where visitors could not handle the wildlife.
The cruises are held on Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. The first hour of the tour is a boat ride around the bay in pursuit of wildlife, like birds, manatees and dolphins. A continental-style breakfast is provided, including fresh doughnuts from Bailey’s General Store, plus coffee, tea and orange juice. The last half hour is spent at the touch tanks, where attendees get a hands-on experience learning about wildlife that lives on the bottom of the bay.

Tarpon Bay Explorers’ crew celebrate the 18th anniversary.
On Dec. 2, Tarpon Bay Explorers celebrated its 18th year. Established in 2002 with a small fleet of kayaks, canoes and pontoons, it operated out of an eccentric single-story building that was previously part of a marina before Tarpon Bay’s incorporation into the refuge system. TBE now operates out of a newer building constructed in 2008 by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Part-owner and General Manager Wendy Schnapp reported: “We’ve come a long way. 2020 has been a challenging year, but we don’t take any of it for granted. It’s hard to believe that 18 years have gone by; we’ve loved every minute of it. Our partnership with the refuge is awesome and we hope to continue to be the concessionaire for years to come.” For more information, call 239-472-8900 or visit www.tarponbayexplorers.com or www.facebook.com/TarponBayExpl
