After more than 40 years, a Christian has been appointed as head of the Indonesian National Police. General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who was sworn in today at a ceremony led by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, replaces General Idham Azis, who has retired.
Prabowo, a 51-year-old Protestant, was promoted to the top post of the police after heading the Criminal Investigation Agency (
Bareskrim).
He was President Jokowi’s only candidate, and his appointment was unanimously approved on January 20 by the People s Representative Council, Indonesia’s lower house of parliament.
The super policeman also received the support of leading Muslim organisations and Islamic clerics in Banten, the province bordering the capital known for its religious conservatism, where he led the local police.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo inaugurated Listyo Sigit Prabowo as the National Police chief at the State Palace, here on Wednesday, to replace General Idham Azis, due to retire in early February of 2021.
The head of state also promoted Prabowo to the rank of general from commissioner general based on Presidential Decree Number 7/Polri/2021 dated January 27, 2021.

WEST JAVA: Indonesia will soon have a new police chief with the House of Representatives (DPR) approving Com.Gen.Listyo Sigit Prabowo as the successor to General Idham Azis, who retires on February 1, 2021.
Prabowo, who was nominated by President Joko Widodo as Azis’ successor, underwent a fit-and-proper test at the House’s Commission III, which oversees legal affairs, on Wednesday (January 20).
