Women still hemmed in by stereotypes: Barriteau

Barbados Today March 11, 2021 Despite huge strides made by women in the important sectors that have built the region’s economies, outdated ideas around gender roles still haunt these and other professional women up to this day, according to Professor the Most Honourable Eudine Barriteau, the principal of the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill Campus, herself a leading thinker on gender and development. During an online webinar for International Women’s Day – ‘Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world’ – hosted by the Institute for Gender Development Studies: Nita Barrow Unit at UWI, Barriteau said in spite of the many advancements women have made and contributed to our modern societies, they are still too often only being seen as caregivers.
